Who we help...
From small beginnings in 1992 we are celebrating our 21st Anniversary with great excitement, as we share with you all the exciting vision of the Sunbeams Music Centre (click here to see our Capital Campaign Brochure). The centre will enable Sunbeams to support our current delivery, and expand our reach to a National level. At Sunbeams we aim to improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing and skills of severely disabled and disadvantaged people in Cumbria, by engaging them and their families and carers with free, on-going Community Music Therapy, specialist accredited training and community music concerts. Through our Sunbeams Music For Life, Music for Health and Music For Dignity programmes we tackle problems of social exclusion, deprivation, ill-health and inequality still prevalent in the disabled community, particularly in rural communities such as those found in Cumbria. The innovatory, creative methods of our training project will encourage our beneficiaries to realise their full potential, and thus assist them to progress along the pathway to training, and to achieve qualifications for the very first time in their lives. At the same time we remain devoted to helping disadvantaged people through the creative freedom of music. In fulfilling our Mission which aims…. “to help disadvantaged individuals improve their quality of life and self-esteem through the creative freedom of music", 13 specialist graduate musicians deliver Community Music Therapy in 44 different venues – 26 monthly, 15 fortnightly, and 3 weekly. These include care homes, day centres, hospices, special schools, Sunbeams-out-of- school clubs and community venues. Every month, 350 hours of structured, interactive, therapeutic live music workshops are delivered to over 1,185 people of all ages, with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities and special needs.
